KJSEA English
English is a core learning area in Junior School, assessed in KJSEA under paper code 901. At Grade 9 it develops the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, and is examined through two national written papers.
The CBC approach treats English as a tool for communication. Learners are expected to read for meaning, use grammar accurately, and produce clear writing for real purposes. Two written papers are complemented by school-based assessment built up across Junior School.
| Component | Details |
|---|---|
| 901/1: Paper 1 | A written paper of 1 hour 40 minutes (language use and functional writing) |
| 901/2: Paper 2 | A written paper of 1 hour 45 minutes (comprehension and composition) |
| School-based assessment | Recorded through Junior School (Grades 7–9) |
Skills Covered in Grade 9
| Skill area | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Listening & speaking | Oral communication, pronunciation, presentation |
| Reading & comprehension | Understanding texts, drawing meaning and inference |
| Grammar & language use | Tenses, parts of speech, sentence structure, punctuation |
| Writing / composition | Functional and creative writing for different purposes |
How It Is Graded
Performance is reported against the four KJSEA bands: Exceeding, Meeting, Approaching and Below Expectations. The two written papers form the summative score, which combines with school-based assessment towards a learner's Senior School placement.
Revision Tips
Read widely: stories, articles and passages. Regular reading is the single best way to grow vocabulary and sharpen comprehension.
Practise different writing formats, such as letters, reports and narratives, so that structure and layout come naturally under exam conditions.
Tighten your grammar through practice questions, focusing on tenses, agreement and punctuation, since accurate language is rewarded throughout.
